Job Summary: What you need to know about the role- We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to join PayPal’s Developer Experience team, where you will design and build the platforms, SDKs, and integration tooling that enable external developers and merchants to seamlessly connect their systems with PayPal. You will bring strong backend expertise in Java alongside hands-on experience in Node.js and frontend technologies, working across the full stack to deliver the APIs, developer portals, sandbox environments, and workflows that define how the world integrates with PayPal’s payment platform. Job Description: Essential Responsibilities: Delivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles. Advises immediate management on project-level issues Guides junior engineers Operates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices Applies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions Minimum Qualifications: 3+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience. You will work across cross-functional groups — product, architecture, UX, and engineering — to deliver elegant, scalable solutions across both backend and frontend layers. You will be responsible for developing efficient, clean, and reusable code, mentoring engineers, and owning the end-to-end delivery of quality solutions that power PayPal’s external developer ecosystem. Your day to day Partner with product, design, and business teams to deeply understand project requirements, external developer needs, and technical constraints. Design and implement full stack solutions from robust Java backend services and REST APIs to Node.js middleware and frontend components for developer-facing integration systems. Collaborate with software architects to define high-level technical architectures that span backend, API, and frontend layers. Take full ownership of solutions from design through deployment and ongoing maintenance, ensuring end-to-end quality across the software development lifecycle. Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code across the stack, applying strong object-oriented and modern JavaScript design principles. Create and review well-articulated, detailed design documents for complex systems and integration patterns. Conduct thorough code reviews and mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and adherence to coding standards. Troubleshoot and debug complex, large-scale technical issues across backend and frontend layers to ensure smooth performance and minimal downtime. Identify gaps in integration capabilities and collaborate with internal product and technology teams to define and implement solutions. Actively drive agile processes including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and execution, delivering features on time with high quality. Stay current with industry trends to drive innovation, particularly in developer experience, API design, full stack frameworks, and integration patterns. What do you need to bring- 6+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record in large-scale, high-performance full stack systems. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Deep expertise in Java, Spring, and Hibernate, with strong knowledge of REST APIs, Web Services, and build tools. Hands-on experience with Node.js for building backend services, middleware, or developer tooling. Basic to intermediate understanding of frontend technologies including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, or Vue). Solid experience with relational databases such as MySQL or Oracle. Rich object-oriented design and analysis skills, with proven ability to apply these in real-world development scenarios. Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Strong ownership mindset with a bias toward action, delivering results in dynamic, fast-changing environments. Ability to quickly learn and navigate complex systems, with a solution-oriented mindset. Nice to Have Experience building developer platforms, SDKs, or external-facing API integration tooling. Familiarity with sandbox environments, developer portal tooling, or CI/CD systems. Participation in tech communities; open-source contributions, hackathons, tech blogs, or online forums.
